The case for local social media

During Hurricane Irene, most local residents of Vernon NJ did not tune into the local television or radio stations to find out about what was going on with the roads. Instead, they went on their smartphones, laptops and tablet PC’s and logged onto Facebook.

On Facebook, the Vernon Township Police Department started a Facebook page. By the end of the hurricane, over 3,000 followers showed up. So how did the Vernon Township Police Department get so many followers.
A. Consistent updates

A key attribute of Social Media Marketing and Communications centers on establishing a framework for keeping individuals up to date with the information that they need. In this situation, the Vernon Police Department kept everyone up-to-date on road closures and collapses.
B. Spreading the word

All it takes is a few people to start sharing updates. When that happens, more people become aware of the information and therefore, click “like.”

C. A dialogue

Vernon Police answered the questions of the residents and provided information on alternate routes. This not only helped Vernon residents, but helped with the confidence of its residents in the town itself.

As for me, I was glad to see government start thinking outside of the box. Starting a Facebook page and conveying the information was a brilliant idea which saved me time driving as well.

Take a look at the Vernon Township Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/vernonpolice and comment as you see fit.

I agree to you and organic traffic is more important than referral traffic but what about the new blogs which have less content and not yet indexed in Google and don't have even a single back link, then Social Media sites helps us to promote the newly created brand and spreading it in the internet.
